> Aug 31: ACMICA meeting, theme - the political economy of a sustainable
world
It's often thought sustainable development (SD) only relates to "green"
and "brown" issues (deforestation, biodiversity, oceans, sanitation,
health) but as the Bali PrepCom attests, this is only half the story.
SD also encompasses issues of trade and finance, debt, aid etc. and it
is these that will no doubt cause the most problems at Johannesburg.
As the WSSD convenes, we send best wishes to our ICMICA friends
lobbying in Johannesburg and invite friends of ACMICA in Sydney to meet
this Saturday for our own conversation around this imperative issue. There
will be a multimedia presentation (we'll show some short film clips
relating to the issue), a report on Bali, and an optional committee meeting
afterwards.
Details:
Mass: Optional mass at 6pm at St Joseph's Church, Lennox St, Newtown,
NSW.
Meeting: from 7pm in the Pink Room next to the church.
Light meal/refreshments provided. Please rsvp
for catering purposes.

> Sr Susan Connelly's new book, Questions from the Asylum
We had the good opportunity of reviewing Sr Susan Connelly's new book
on Australia's asylum issues, Questions
from the Asylum: An Analysis of Australia's Asulum and Detention
Issues, Otford Press, 2002 (ISBN 1 876928 22 0).
This book is a collection of speeches delivered by Sr Susan at rallies
and includes the memorable "Bleeding Hearts" speech at this
year's Palm Sunday rally for refugees.
Sr Susan is a Sister of St Joseph and outspoken advocate of East Timor
issues and change in our national culture towards more morality and principle
in governance and character. We're also proud of the fact that Sr Susan
is a friend and supporter of ACMICA.
You can order copies (retails about $6) from Otford Press (www.otford.com.au)
or by contacting the Mary MacKillop Institute of East Timorese Studies
